First Floor Extension - Gough Road, Stratford E15

James approached us with a very specific brief, for his small, period property that was soon to be accommodating new arrivals to the family. An additional en-suite bedroom and improved space to the existing bedrooms was the key requirement, which at first glance would be achieved through a standard two storey rear extension. However, due to the shape and layout of this unique home, with surrounding buildings and walled garden restricting light to the rear internal rooms, it was essential that loss of light to the ground floor windows be minimised. A standard two storey extension would block up one window and severely overshadow the patio doors, so the extension was designed over the first floor only, with the ground floor area remaining open and supported on steel columns, so that natural light could still flood through (it also provides a handy undercover area within the garden). Through use of traditional materials and design, the extension still compliments the Victorian aesthetic of the building. We are particularly pleased with how this project turned out, as our client informs us that the new internal spaces perfectly met his increased needs, and is bringing a lot of happiness and comfort to his family. Humphreys and Sons carried out all design and drawing work, planning permission, building regulations, party wall agreements, and we also put Jamie in touch with one of our great builders, who was appointed an carried out the work.
